Newark Emmaus Trust – Mum and Baby

Accommodation is provided in family units for pregnant teenagers or teenage parents aged 16-25 years old. All of the properties are fully furnished and equipped for a mother and her baby and residents have access to 24 hour staff in an emergency. A holistic package of care and support is provided to ensure that each young person can learn and develop the skills that they need to look after their baby whilst preparing to live independently.

Description of service and support

Accommodation is in four, two bedroom semi detached houses and one, two bedroom self contained ground floor flat that is within a block with access to on-site 24 hour professional staff. All of the accommodation is in Newark and within walking distance to the town centre. All of the accommodation is fully furnished and equipped with washers, cookers etc. and includes soft furnishings and bedding for a mother and her baby including a cot and mattress.

Support offered includes:

Key work support via a named key worker and provided through weekly meetings;

Support to learn key living and independence skills is provided. These may include cooking and preparing healthy meals, cleaning and caring for their accommodation, budgeting and managing their money whilst working towards independent living.

Residents are encouraged to complete six workbooks based on Key Skills for Independence. These include:
1. Moving On and Managing Change;
2. Understanding your Tenancy;
3. Housing Options and Viewing a Flat;
4. Furnishing a Flat,
5. Money Management
6. Staying Safe and Healthy Living.

Access to NEET and academic education and life skills training programmes is also available in a purpose built training centre. As  part of the training courses provided residents have an opportunity to take part in trips, adventurous activities and residential visits.

Generally residents move on to Independent living within the community and to access further training and/or employment.

Pregnant teenagers or teenage parents aged 16-25 years old who are willing to access one to one support from the project staff on a weekly basis. Partners are permitted to visit and/or stay overnight, and can, with permission also live with their partners as a couple in the family unit but they must then make a joint claim for welfare benefits.
By completion of an A1 Referral and Assessment Process via a centralised waiting list under Targeted Youth Support. Young people can self refer in person or by telephone or can be referred by a support worker or another agency.
