Umuada is a specialist supported housing project which prioritises referrals from Black and Minority Ethnic women and their children and provides emergency, short term accommodation with support for those fleeing from domestic abuse. Staff will support with confidence, the Freedom Programme and life skill building, resettlement and signposting to specialist agencies.
Description of service and support
The accommodation is fully furnished and includes communal areas and a secure indoor play area & outdoor activity area. There is easy access to local town and to public transport. The building is secluded and has excellent security systems including CCTV, a gate opened by keypad and CCTV throughout the exterior and communal areas. Staff support is accessible 24 hours a day either through day time staff based at the refuge or out of hours staff contacted via Tunstall Systems at all other times. Facilities include a laundry room, a multi faith prayer room and specialist cooking equipment in the areas reserved for women from BMER communities. Rooms can be opened up via interconnecting doors to accommodate larger families. Umuada has one self contained flat which is suitable for women or children with disabilities who are not wheelchair users or more vulnerable service users. Support provided includes:
- Essential life skills and independent living skills including managing finances and shopping;
- Support to gain employment and further education;
- Advice in claiming welfare benefits;
- Support and advice to gain more permanent accommodation and independent living;
- Support planning and risk assessments tailored to meet individual needs;
- Named Keyworker for each individual;
- Out of hours support provided by the NCHA SMaRT service (Support Management and Response Team);
- Respect for choices, privacy, confidentiality and promotion of equalities and diversity;
- Support around safety planning;
- Support sessions and regular Service User meetings.
There are 6 daytime staff and a large out of hours duty team. Pets are not accepted.
